Common Misconceptions About Polyester Lanyard

My medical company regularly brings out new medical formulations for which, it regularly conducts press releases. These press releases are attended by the same invited journalists – roughly 250 of them; give or take a few absentees.
My company’s design team, therefore, came up with a simple design that contained the company colours (dark blue). It also had the company name embossed on top of the colour background and the words “Press Release” added to it. It was as simple, basic design.
I ordered 1,000 units of these of which roughly 250 were handed out during the first press release. During the second press release, around 180 of the journalists arrived with the lanyards they had received during the first press release so, I had to only hand out 70-odd lanyards.
I take full credit for the fact that I had planned this. But for this to work well, I had to do two things right; have a design that would work for all press releases and second; order lanyards that were comfortable to wear and last a long time.

The common misconception that many newbies have about flat polyester lanyards is that the material is polyester and everything else remains the same. This is wrong.
Polyester, is a difficult material to print on. For this reason, best results are obtained by simple designs for example, a simple, single-colour background and some simple text on it. No logos, no monograms, no images, no complicated styles. If you deviate from this, your flat polyester lanyard is going to look bad and there are other types of lanyards that are better for such designs.
Essentially, for polyester lanyards, they use a printing technique known as ‘screen printing’. In this method, the artwork is ironed onto the material directly and lies on top of the polyester material. It is the roughness of the material that makes fine printing almost impossible. Flat polyester lanyards are therefore used where quality is not such an issue and the design is relatively simple.
Flat Polyester lanyards are long lasting and durable and are economical to purchase. So, for press releases where the only need is to restrict entry to those who have been invited, we use polyester lanyards. They are worn for a few hours and then removed. Naturally for conferences attended by medical professionals, we use a more expensive variety of lanyards.

When I was hired by a new medical start up, one of the first things I was tasked with, was to design and get printed 250 customized lanyards for the invited guests to a medical press release.
I had to do some research and learn from scratch because I had no idea about the various printing processes of lanyards. I contacted some friends from companies that regularly organised seminars and conferences in Dublin and ordered lanyards for the same.
So, here’s what I found out; when it comes to lanyards, the corporate world prefers sublimation lanyards and with good reason too.
With sublimation lanyards, you start off with a blank material and then the design is imprinted onto the material – and that is what you will receive in the completed product. Same colour combination, same designs, same logos etc. There are no restrictions placed on your design team. You can use gradients, shadow effects, fine details – all are possible with sublimated lanyards.
The corporate world is a stickler for uniformity. They simply must have the same colours and monograms everywhere; be it their official stationery or lanyards. Other types of lanyards are much more limited in terms of colours and styles so really sublimation was the only method.
